Of course they hadn’t isolated Vitamin C at the time and the fruits were only there to protect against scurvy, but those crusty sailors were on to something. Vitamin C is the very “hub of the antioxidant network,” linking fat-soluble with water-soluble antioxidants to protect the brain from free radical damage.6 Most of us don’t get nearly enough Vitamin C, so pack those lunches with plenty of fruits and vegetables.
