The Super Spices

bfood_vitherbs_spicesDid you know that spices and herbs are actually classified as fruits and vegetables?

And without the water that constitutes a large part of fresh produce, spices and herbs actually offer a higher level of antioxidants. So, what are the super spices? 9

  • Cinnamon: Tasty and versatile, cinnamon can be added to lots of different meals and packs plenty of antioxidants.
  • Oregano: Perfect for everyday foods like pasta, pizza and sandwiches, a single teaspoon of oregano packs as much antioxidant power as three cups of chopped broccoli.
  • Ginger: Ideal for sweet or savory foods, ginger goes on frozen yogurt as easily as it does a salmon fillet.
  • Dried red peppers: A bit of cayenne, crushed red pepper or paprika gives your meals plenty of antioxidants (and clears out the sinuses!).
  • Rosemary: Sprinkle some rosemary into a pasta sauce or on whole grain bread for an antioxidant boost.
  • Thyme: Aside from the antioxidant benefit, researchers are also studying the role of thyme in respiratory function. Whisk some into salad dressings and dips or sprinkle it on cooked veggies and fish.
  • Turmeric: The bright yellow spice is commonly found in curry powder and contains high levels of phenols – potent antioxidants that prevent inflammation and limit cell damage caused by free radicals.10 It’s great in different soups, chilis, stews, rice dishes, as well as a variety of Mexican and Indian recipes.
